time2me is Traffic Aware

I discovered a new LBS tonight its called time2me, however my Treo 700P is not supported. At this moment they only support Windows Mobile phones but soon Java versions for Nokia and BlackBerry will be available. In any case this is a slick mobile application that combines location sharing features with best route to take recommendations, obtained from time2me's free traffic network.

Users have the option to call a free traffic service with this application and that reminds me of Google Maps Mobile without the social features of time2me. You can check if your mobile phone is already supported. With time2me, you can plan your route, avoid traffic snarls, predict your travel time, and share your location with family or colleagues.

Speaking of traffic

Speaking of traffic - the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), Caltrans, Nokia, and UC Berkeley’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering are collaborating to conduct an unprecedented experiment in the area of traffic monitoring. The experiment will test a novel traffic monitoring system designed to collect velocity and position data from GPS‐enabled Nokia N95 cellular phones. 100 vehicles carrying the GPS‐equipped Nokia N95 will drive along a 10‐mile stretch of I‐880 between Hayward and Fremont, California.

  • 9:30 a.m.: Cars launch from UC Berkeley.

  • 10-11 a.m.: Experiment gets underway: Cars arrive in Union City, organize by team colors, and are dispatched on their routes 10:30 a.m. Press conference and technical briefing
  • 10:30-6:30: Cars drive 10-mile routes along I-880 corridor, transmitting data to command center
  • 4 p.m.: Institute of Transportation Studies seminar
